The Hydroseeding Process

Hydroseeding is a mixture of seed, mulch, fertilizer, healthy soil, and water in a hydroseeding tank. Once this mixture is combined, it forms a thick slurry. This slurry is applied with pressure to the prepared soil for seed germination and turf development. This process creates an evenly covered area that forms a barrier to keep seed stabilized and retain moisture, while ultimately resulting in a full, lush lawn.

Benefits of Hydroseeding

Are you thinking of apply hydroseed to an area? There are many benefits to having your yard hydroseeded over sod or planting it yourself. Hydroseeding is an affordable option. In addition to the general cost of sodding, you’ll also need to buy mulch, fertilizers, potential labor, and much more. All the extra costs make hydroseeding much more cost-effective. Hydroseeding is fast compared to alternative ways to seed. You can see growth in as little as 1 week. The quicker it comes in, the less time you’ll have to spend in the tedious germination phase. The quality of lawn that hydroseeding yields is much healthier, greener and longer lasting than sodding or hand seeding applications. The root establishment is deeper and avoids the shock of being transplanted. Another benefit of hydroseeding your lawn is the ability to customize. Your lawn might require a different, more specialized, type of seed. This depends on the level of sun exposure it gets, the type of soil, and many other factors. Our professionals are knowledgeable and ready to beautify your landscape today.

Hydroseeding Recommendations

Here are my recommendations for establishing after hydro-seeding. If you have any questions, please feel free to call. All excess spray can be hosed off fence, sidewalks, etc. after seed has dried. It is non toxic dye that does not stain.

Watering - After seeding, let the mulch dry down once, and then do not let it dry out again. Start with short, frequent watering and avoid puddling. After emergence, gradually extend the amount of water and the time between watering so that at 6-8 weeks after seeding, you are watering once a day. In the spring, start watering sooner than you think you should, and never let the ground dry out completely.

Fertilizing - Fertilize 2-3 weeks after seeding, use a seed & sod starter type of 16-16-15. The fertilizer should be applied at the rate of 4.5-5 lbs. per 1000 sq. ft. A good fertilizer program is essential to a healthy lawn. (See fertilizer program recommendations).

Mowing - When the tallest plants reach a height of about 2.5 inches, the lawn should be mowed to a height of about 1.5 inches. Continue mowing at this height until all the plants reach the blade. Then if it is hot, raise the blade height 1 notch, mow twice and repeat until the blade height is about 2.5 inches. When it cools down, reverse the process so that the blade height is about 1.5 inches going in to winter, start here in the spring, repeat the process.

*Mow only 1/3 of the total height of the grass (i.e., at 3 inches, mow to 2 inches).

Weed Control - The best weed control program is a good fertilizing program. We suggest 2-4 D Concentrate.

  • Never go over label rate on new grass!
  • Never spray a lawn under stress. Keep up with the water and fertilizer.
  • If crabgrass is bad, you can use off-the-shelf crabgrass chemicals, but no sooner than spring. A couple of months after seeding. Best for crabgrass is pre-emergent spray in the spring.
  • If you have Japanese Clover (Black Medic) or Oxalis, I would recommend having a professional spray these out. The best chemicals are not available to homeowners.
